“Characters That Go The Distance”

Characters are the foundation upon which storytellers build their plots. When readers love a book’s characters, they will return to that author’s work time and time again. In this presentation, Margaret Mizushima will share methods she used to develop the characters in her award-winning Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series, along with tips she has picked up from other writers during her publishing journey.
Margaret Mizushima writes the internationally published Timber Creek K-9 Mysteries. She served as a past president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Mystery Writers of America and was elected Writer of the Year by Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. She is the recipient of a Colorado Authors League Award, a Benjamin Franklin Book Award, a CIBA CLUE Award, and two WILLA Literary Awards by Women Writing the West. Her books have been finalists for a SPUR Award by Western Writers of America, a Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award, and the Colorado Book Award. She and her husband recently moved from Colorado, where they raised two daughters and a multitude of animals, to a home in the Pacific Northwest. Learn more at her website www.margaretmizushima.com.

“What Makes an Editor Say Yes?”

What makes editors say “yes” to some queries and “pass” to others? Of course there’s the magic of timing, luck, and whatever special spice is woven into your pitch. But there are also some key indicators that might make an editor look twice at your book—and email you back asking for more. Emily Graf, Managing Editor at Sentient Publications, shares recommendations and practical guidance from her side of the editorial desk. This talk will be especially applicable for nonfiction authors, but there will be something for everyone here! Come with questions as this sessions is meant to be interactive.
Emily Graf is the acquiring editor at Sentient Publications, a traditional nonfiction publisher. She is a poet, independent editor, and book doula. Her poetry has been published or is forthcoming in Bombay Gin, New Feathers Anthology, Chestnut Review, and elsewhere. She is also an essayist, with a recent viral publication with HuffPost.
